THE BUZZ
Butterflies, bees, moths and hummingbirds are responsible for the foods we eat and the ways we farm.
Cultures and communities across the globe have relied on their steady work since the beginning of time. They are shrouded in mystery while also being among the most vital and ubiquitous species on the planet.
Their story is one of humanity itself - a barometer of the past and a predictor of our future.
Pollinators are essential for the food we eat and the survival of the planet.
POLLINATORS
ARE THE
BACKBONE TO HUMANITY
FOOD HEROES
CHEF RICHARD SANDOVAL
Chef Sandoval has been thinking about how food gets to our table for as long as he can remember. Growing up in Mexico City, Richard and his family would gather at his grandmother’s table each Sunday for large, lively meals.
He would often join his grandmother in the kitchen as she prepared authentic Mexican dishes from scratch, instilling early on his passion for traditional Mexican food. Meanwhile, his restaurateur father.
Chef Sandoval’s story is one of an immigrant family’s love of preserving food and culture. It is an ethos Sandoval has dedicated his life to upholding. Sandoval realizes that without our pollinators, our foods, our culture and our traditions would cease to exist.
A LEGACY IN THE MAKING…
In 1997 Richard opened his first restaurant in New York City. As his career blossomed he also started a family in the United States. Both of his children are now adults working in the family business.
Richard’s son, Giancarlo is following in his father’s footsteps and is the future of the Sandoval restaurant legacy. He too has spent many days roving the markets, visiting the fields and cooking alongside his father. Today, Giancarlo is poised to inherit the Sandoval restaurant concept, upholding a tradition four generations in the making.
Richard’s dedication to saving our pollinators is not solely out of gratitude and necessity to his own success. But now, as Giancarlo takes over, his passion in saving our pollinators is driven by his desire to ensure that the ingredients and products of his own Mexican heritage survive and thrive for the next generations.
Chef Sandoval & a teenage Giancarlo appear on the acclaimed PBS series Chefs A’ Field.
PASSION DRIVEN BY ACTION…
Chef Richard Sandoval lives his passions.
Richard’s restaurant portfolio spans 12 countries and 4 continents. His commitment to introducing Latin cuisine to the world comes with a deep commitment to integrity in every things he does.
His recent appointment to the Board of the Regenerative Apiculture Working Group speaks to his passion for pollinators. As a board member, Richard is taking a leadership role in supporting the beekeepers and farmers who grow our food.
Through Richard’s journey, audiences discover that saving bees and other pollinators is not simply about honey — it is about protecting the future of food and biodiversity.

He is internationally acclaimed for his innovative approach in combining Latin ingredients with modern culinary techniques to create award-winning flavors that span over 60 locations and 4 continents.
Chef Sandoval is commended for elevating Latin American dining on a global scale and is known as the father of Modern Mexican cuisine.
In 2022 Sandoval founded the global initiative VIVA ABEJAS, meaning “long live bees.” Since it’s formation, Viva Abejas has acted as a platform for education and sustainability. Our food and drink capsule collections act as only a delicious component in raising awareness and educating the next generations about the importance of bees to the food cycle and maintaining the health of our ecosystems and earth.
Amplifying the significance of bees to our food cycle continues to be center plate for our Viva Abejas program. We’re aiming to educate 60,000 students annually, and deploying our own teams to work hand-in-hand with Title 1 schools around the country. We have designed an in-classroom lesson plan with educators and curriculum experts at Slow Foods USA to best tailor this message to the earliest of learners.
