COME WITH US ON A

CULINARY ADVENTURE

CRISSCROSSING THE GLOBE TO EXPLORE

THE ORIGINS OF GREAT INGREDIENTS

IN A PERSISTANT PURSUIT TO

SAVE THE BEES

AND CELEBRATE THE FARMERS

THAT BRING THE INGREDIENTS TO OUR TABLES

THE BUZZ

In the kitchens of the world’s greatest restaurants there is a buzz of excitement as chefs and mixologists hone their recipes in the lifelong pursuit of culinary perfection. Across the globe, restaurants go to great lengths in seeking out the best, most pristine ingredients.

There is one element that is central to nearly every ingredient - the Bees.

Everything we eat - from the world’s fanciest restaurant to our home cooked meals - relies on the hard work taking place in nature. At the centerpiece of every meal we consume is a forgotten food hero - buzzing to make sure our ingredients materialize.

That often forgotten hero is the bee - responsible for pollinating one in every three bites of food we eat. In a global journey, famed Chef Richard Sandoval follows the path of the honey bees. It’s a journey inspired by his global efforts and book VIVA ABEJAS, an initiative to amplify and educate the world about the importance of bees.

VIVA ABEJAS

Chef Sandoval has been thinking about how food gets to our table for as long as he can remember. Growing up in Mexico City, the young Chef Sandoval and his family would gather at his grandmother’s table each Sunday for large, lively meals. He would often join his grandmother in the kitchen as she prepared authentic Mexican dishes from scratch, instilling early on his passion for traditional Mexican food. Meanwhile, his restaurateur father, owner of Madeiras and Villa Fiore in Mexico City, was imparting lessons from the restaurant kitchen.

Chef Sandoval’s story is one of an immigrant family’s love of preserving food and culture. It is an ethos Sandoval has dedicated his life to uphold.

From field to kitchen Chef Sandoval seeks to understand why honey bees are in decline worldwide, while also commemorating their immense contribution to the world of food. It is a celebration of ingredients and cooking - a delicious journey into the natural world we rely on.

ONE IN THREE BITES

          REQUIRES POLLINATION

                FROM BEES

Chef Sandoval takes us to meet his friends and colleagues, notable chefs and culinary luminaries who venture to the source of their favorite ingredients to experience first-hand the efforts that are required to bring food to the table.

It begins with a recipe, a cocktail, an ingredient. The inspiration takes us on an adventure to find out how these ingredients come to be, beginning with the source - whether it's on the farm or in the wild - we take a deep dive into the root of things.

Exploring farming techniques and seeing the bee’s work first-hand, viewers are offered an intriguing and beautiful foray into the practices that grow (and pollinate) our food.  We meet the hard working farmers and bee keepers who have dedicated their lives to ensuring that the ingredients get to our plates.

IT IS AN EXPLORATION THAT GOES

BEYOND FARM TO TABLE

Each episode takes us to one of the world’s great culinary regions. From the agave fields in Mexico to vineyards of France and pepper fields in Peru to olive orchards of Morocco - we work alongside the farmers, busy bees and their keepers to see how they grow and harvest the ingredients.

We dig in the dirt and eat from the fields in a fascinating exploration that showcases the many methods and farming techniques that make up our global table.

With stunning visuals our cameras peer inside the hives to witness the delicate and powerful work of the bees. Our keepers explain the natural order, reflect on methods of pollination and discuss what we need to do to ensure the future of our food.

Experiencing beekeeping methods and approaches from various cultures is an intriguing and beautiful exploration of nature’s impressive interconnections.

      OUR BEES

           ARE IN DESPERATE DECLINE

                        WORLDWIDE

We delve into indigenous methods - learning from those who are keeping old foodways and traditions alive - in hopes of preserving the world’s bee populations.

We experience new methods of farming that are mitigating the effects of climate change and examine the innovative efforts of farmers taking bold steps for the future. Each farm and bee keeper offers a deep cultural insight into the land as we explore the diversity of our global food ways.

Each episode culminates where it began - in the world’s most lauded kitchens.

Chef Sandoval takes the helm as he and his friends transform the gathered ingredients into stunning culinary feasts. All the while they lay tribute to the pollinators, farmers and cultures that they have called on.

The ingredients come full circle as we celebrate the recipes that set us out on this special culinary adventure.

The series is an opportunity to connect with the natural world in a way that we can all relate to - through food. Viewers experience the delicate interplay between our changing world and the food they eat everyday.

This series celebrates food that is delicious and meaningful.

RICHARD SANDOVAL

In 2022 Sandoval founded the global initiative VIVA ABEJAS, meaning “long live bees.” Since it’s formation, Viva Abejas has acted as a platform for education and sustainability. Chef Sandoval’s passion for culinary excellence works harmoniously with this goal, as food often acts as a unifying experience in life, community, and education. Our food and drink capsule collections act as only a delicious component in raising awareness and educating the next generations about the importance of bees to the food cycle and maintaining the health of our ecosystems and earth.

Amplifying the significance of bees to our food cycle continues to be center plate for our Viva Abejas program. We’re aiming to educate 60,000 students annually, and deploying our own teams to work hand-in-hand with Title 1 schools around the country. We have designed an in-classroom lesson plan with educators and curriculum experts at Slow Foods USA to best tailor this message to the earliest of learners.

PRODUCTION APPROACH

Each episode is centered around a specific location with its own unique personality  and cuisine. With each location we are based in a main restaurant, but venture out to engage other “friends of the Chef” who will help shape the storylines and contribute to the recipes. On farms and locations across the globe we experience the people and places that define a region.

First-person narratives and interactions showcasing the beauty, intrigue, and uniqueness of each location connects with viewers on a deeply personal level. Chef Sandoval guides us through the adventure while sharing his passion for the culinary arts and special ingredients the world has to offer. As we move through the region, we interact with a host of personalities - friends, chefs, purveyors, farmers, beekeepers to keep the adventure lively and intriguing. Each episode culminates in a boisterous feast that offers viewers a tantalizing look at the cuisine.

Filmed in stunning 4K, our cameras will capture the physical beauty of each location from multiple viewpoints - high above the city, deep in the hives, up close in the fields, and the kitchen through the eyes of the chef. Our approach combines cinematic techniques with a bird's eye view. Stunning cinematography and genuine storytelling combine to create a feast for the eyes and ears that engages viewers.

Our producers and camera crews are particularly experienced in filming with non-actors and specialize in creating an environment in which subjects can be honest, passionate, heartfelt and personal.
